Once again Dudley Shukokai Karate Club welcomed 9 times world champion Wayne Otto OBE to the club for an exclusive training session with him.
With quite a few competitions on the horizon and more of Dudley Shukokai Karate Clubs students having been selected to represent the F.E.K.O squad his teaching was invaluable to us all.
The first session for the junior grades started with basic techniques and adding to these techniques gradually so by the end of the first hour the students had quite a few techniques to remember and put together, thus helping with memory and co-ordination.
The under six's class had joined in this session and even they were remembering the techniques and what order they were being delivered in. Quite an achievement for some of them who have not mastered their right from their left yet. After that Sensei Wayne Otto went on to teach them about re-action times and by tapping a part of the body to see how quick their opponent could deliver the technique. After that it was time for some well earned lunch.
Sensei Wayne Otto finished the session with a question and answer session to which he gave some very imformative answers.
Q: Have you ever had any bad decisions made against you by referee's
A: All the time! remember the referees are only human and humans make mistakes. However one day you may have a wrong decision and the next time the wrong decision may go in your favour just shrug it off and go onto the next fight.
Q: What made you want to start karate in the first place.
A:I was jealous! my friend came to school one day with a hugh trophy he had won in a competition and I thought I would like something like that, and the rest as you say is history.
Q: How do you win nine world titles
A: I never set out with the intention of winning a world title I just wanted to win trophies and compete, as it turned out I was very good at karate so the titles just followed I suppose.
Sensei Wayne Otto then finished the session with a photo shoot with the instructors and students. Many thanks to Sensei Wayne Otto for once again joining Dudley Shukokai Karate Club and we look forward to him joining us all again when we all go on our training camp this year in Blackpool (Pontins).
Dudley Shukokai Karate Club - Wayne Otto training session
The afternoon session for the adults and senior students started with Sensei Wayne Otto talking about fainting and pulling techniques out of the opponents, basically seeing what they will do when you deliver a technique! Sensei Wayne Otto talked about always watching the way the other fighters in your categories are fighting and learning, from the three minutes they are on the mat , because you may be competing against them next.
So by the end of the session everybody's sparring techniques were a lot sharper and their re-action times were even quicker.
