W.K.A. National Open Karate Championship 28th February 2010
Dudley Shukokai travelled to Birmingham for the first time to the W.K.A. Open karate Championships. The aim of this tournament was to select students to represent W.K.A. in the world championships to be held here in October in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The club got off to a great start with Rhys Williams taking our first gold medal of the day in the boys 10-12 category. There was some excellent kata being performed from the W.K.A. Group as well as others and the Dudley students had to work hard for their places. The men’s event turned out to be an excellent competition with Daniel Read and team mate Scott Reynolds fighting it out for their 1st and 2nd places. Scott eventually took the Gold but only by one point of a score. The team kata made up of Daniel, Scott and team mate Liam Jackson finished off the kata section with a win and secured the Gold medal.
Onto the kumite and our younger members continued the winning streak with Rhys Williams taking his second Gold medal of the day, team mate Sam Woodridge doing the same after some difficult fights! Liam Jackson had his third Gold medal of the day fighting through rounds to eventually win the final. Once again the men’s final was to be dominated by Dudley students with firstly twins Dan and Josh Rock fighting against each other in the junior men’s section with Tariq Murad taking the Bronze medal. Josh eventually won the Gold medal and brother Dan had to settle for the Silver after a really closely fought final.
The senior men had already seen Daniel Read and Scott Reynolds fight it out for the 1st and 2nd place in the kata section, now having fought through the rounds the two men once again came up against each other in the final. It was an excellent fight with the score at 2-2 at full time, then they went into extra time with Scott once again taking the Gold medal by one point.
Overall it was an excellent tournament for all the Dudley students and many thanks go to Sensei John Richards for inviting us to his competition.. Thanks also to Dave Davies for being a table official and to Stuart Forsyth for some excellent refereeing on the day. Well done to all who participated.
